If you have a debit card issued by any country but Japan, PLEASE keep reading. The ATM in Japan may not accept your card when you withdrew money. I didn't imagine this would cause us so much trouble in the days in Yakushima. We tried the only two ATM machines in Kagoshima Airport. One is operated by the Kagoshima Bank which doesn't like our debit cards ; while another one is the post office ATM and luckily we can successfully withdrew ¥35,000 each. If we really have no cash, we could perhaps trade with people to get exchange of the ticket or food we need.

Those amount of cash was planned to spend for expenses in Yakushima, the ferry ticket to and from the Island, the transportation fee in town, the two days accommodation , the food and rent of camping equipment . Everything is CASH only. They do not take EPS or credit card. Although we have calculated the amount we need plus the spare cash, we did not have enough because accidents are everywhere and happened unexpectedly. We needed extra money to solve the problem.
The transportation fee in Yakushima is very high. The single bus ride costs ¥960, then another ¥870 for the shuttle bus. It means we paid ¥1850 in return. Another reason for the cash shortage because we had a meal in the restaurant on the first day arrived in Yakushima. The price was relatively high - ¥3000. I would not be a big issue normally, but not when we had not enough spare cash. End up we found that the cash we had was just enough to take single ride of the bus. We asked the owner of the homestay to see if there is ATM around. The shocking news is the ATM are closed at night and we have to wait until tomorrow morning. I thought I misheard what he said. What? The ATM operates during office hour - 9am to 6pm like me in Hong Kong? We cannot get the morning in the morning because we should take the bus departing at 5am and we should start hiking by the time ATM opened. I had no clues what should we do and sit on the chair with an empty mind. The owner realised something wrong and asked us how much do we need. He is really a great guy and even an angel to safe our day and delight our time in Yakushima!! Finally we had ¥5000 from him. It is not a big amount, but means a lot!!
